What is insider risk management?
Insider risk management (IRM) is the discipline of detecting and mitigating security risk from identities that already have legitimate access - employees, contractors, and increasingly AI assistants acting on their behalf. Rather than matching data against blocklists, IRM platforms read behavior over time: how someone’s activity differs from their own baseline, whether data movement fits their role, and where the trajectory is heading - intervening before loss, in proportion to the risk.

Why insiders are the hard problem
Every control that keeps outsiders out is blind to someone who is supposed to be inside. Insider incidents - a departing salesperson exporting the pipeline, a contractor with over-broad access, an employee pasting source code into a personal chatbot - involve permitted credentials doing technically permitted things. The signal is not in any single event but in the pattern: staging behavior, unusual timing, access drift. That is why rule-based tools fire late and behavioral models are the emerging standard.
The AI assistant as the newest insider
AI tools have quietly become insiders: they hold delegated access, read sensitive material, and act autonomously. Unsanctioned use - shadow AI - moves data into external models invisibly to classic controls. Modern IRM extends the behavioral lens to machine activity: which AI tools are in use, what flows into them, and what agents do with the access they are given. Predict Security treats this as a first-class surface alongside human behavior.

FAQ
Common questions.
How is insider risk management different from DLP?
DLP inspects content at the moment it moves and blocks pattern matches; IRM reads the behavior around the data over time and can act before movement. In practice IRM absorbs most of the DLP mission with far less alert noise - see our full comparison of the two approaches.
Can insider risk monitoring respect employee privacy?
Yes, if the architecture is built for it: Predict Security keeps employees pseudonymous by default, filters sensitive evidence locally on the endpoint, and requires dual approval before an identity is revealed - the design that gets legal, HR and works councils to yes.
Which vendor provides insider risk management?
In the Lionet portfolio, Predict Security covers insider risk with behavioral intent analysis across browsers, desktop apps, internal tools and AI assistants. Lionet distributes Predict Security through channel partners with privacy-first, engineer-led proofs of concept.
